Portable gaming has been in decline for the past few years and this fact has been much more noticeable during the past few months, especially after the launch of the Nintendo 3DS. The latter was expected to be extremely successful as after all, the handheld incorporated basic 3D functionality at the same time it retained the basic design that made the original DS such a great portable console. In the end though, the Nintendo 3DS was not well received by most people and Nintendo was forced to considerably reduce its price to encourage sales. The main problem with the 3DS was that only a handful of games showed its true potential and at the same time, it had to compete against the iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad devices which undoubtedly are the portable consoles of the moment.
A while later, Sony officially unveiled a new handheld called the PlayStation Vita and even though many analysts and people from the industry were already predicting the death of portable consoles, the Vita seems like an interesting device that may be bigger than they think. The most important announcements were given at this year’s E3 where Sony stated the price, lineup of games and explained some of the basic things you were going to be able to do with the Vita (like use social networking applications to access Facebook, Twitter, Skype or foursquare,) but after that, the console hasn’t received a very aggressive marketing campaign as everyone was predicting. This is not necessarily a bad thing as after all, the PlayStation 3 was heavily marketed before it came out and arguably, that didn’t make a huge difference. Instead of doing that, it seems like the Japanese-based company is focusing on the launch lineup which seems pretty great and varied. Not only is Sony launching what appear to be some very good games, but there are also several of them.
Some of them include: Sound Shapes, Escape Plan, Little Big Planet, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Gravity Rush, Resistance: Burning Skies, FIFA Soccer, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, ModNation Racers: Road Trip, Little Deviants, Lumines: Electric Symphony, Touch My Katamari and Ridge Racer, among many other titles.
The Vita is officially out in Japan and other Asian territories (it was released on December 17, 2011,) and soon enough we’ll be able to watch video reviews or read articles about the console’s technical performance. In the meantime, people in America and Europe will have to wait a while longer for the official release in those territories as the PlayStation Vita will be coming out on February 22, 2012. After looking at the list of games that are going to be released alongside the console I can’t avoid but to be cautiously optimistic and if Sony keeps supporting the portable with great games and additional apps that allow users to do more than just play awesome games I’m pretty sure the company will have nothing to worry about.

Final Fantasy X is definitely going to come out for the PlayStation Vita. I haven't mentioned it in my latest articles because the game won't be a launch title and it's a remake, but I'm also really looking forward to it, even when I played it fairly recently. Also, I hope Square Enix starts developing games like Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions or Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII as those were some of the best RPGs to have ever come out for the PlayStation Portable.
