Question Emerald Coast In Sonic Generations 3DS?

A single screenshot has emerged this morning of what appears to reveal a new stage, Emerald Coast, in the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations. For those who didn’t know, this handheld version of the upcoming game is set to contain entirely different levels from its HD console counterparts. Before now, only three levels were known to be in some form featured in the 3DS title; those being Green Hill, Launch Base and the recently unveiled, Mushroom Hill.

The image released shows the blue blur running away from an attacking whale, in a reference to that iconic scene from Emerald Coast, the first of Sonic’s stages from Sonic Adventure, which made its debut on the Dreamcast in 1999.

While it is a safe assumption to make that this is Emerald Coast, there are a few other possibilities to consider.

Sonic The Hedgehog for Xbox 360 and PS3 also paid homage to the same level from Adventure, in the form of Wave Ocean, which included a similar scene where the blue hedgehog flees from an oncoming whale. Thus, it could potentially be Wave Ocean.

Furthermore, it isn’t beyond the realms of possibility that this could be another entirely different stage and that this is merely a throwback to the Dreamcast game. SEGA have already shown that they’re doing this type of thing with the HD version of Generations, as one act from classic Seaside Hill in that version is known to contain a tribute to Sonic 3’s Hydrocity Zone.

If it were to be Emerald Coast, however, it would be the fourth level from a home console Sonic game to be making an appearance in the upcoming 3DS title. Originally, the producer of Generations said in an E3 interview with Sonic Stadium that ‘The 3DS version is a celebration of Sonic’s portable history’. Whether this statement is true still remains to be seen, as not a single stage from any of the portable games has been revealed yet.

Sonic Generations is scheduled for release November 2011 on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, with the 3DS version set to follow shortly afterward.
