    Carpentry Guide (By Navi)

Carpentry. One of the six important duty puzzles in Puzzle Pirates. Generally the least liked station during pillies, it is still an integral part as it keeps the ship damage down and prevents the ship from sinking. The ultimate goal of carpentry is simple. Fill the hole as fast and efficiently as possible. The best way to become good at carpentry is to remember what pieces come up the most often. Memorize this chart, and you are halfway to becoming a master of carpentry.
The letter is the name of the piece; the number is the amount of times the piece shows up out of 95 pieces. For example, P-22, shows up 22 times out of 95 times.

    Pieces:

    Most Common:

    = F-14
    = Y-14
    = P-22

    Less Common:

    = L-8
    = N-8

    Uncommon:

    = T-7
    = U-4
    = L-4
    = W-4
    = Z-4

    Rare:

    = X-3
    = L-2
    = Putty Bucket-1

    Controls:

    Using the mouse, you can:

Left-click: Select/release a piece. You can move the piece while it is selected.
Mousewheel (scroll or click): Rotate the piece currently selected: scrolling down rotates clockwise, scrolling up rotates counterclockwise, clicking rotates the piece 90 degrees clockwise for each click
Right-click: Horizontally flip the selected piece
For the putty bucket, clicking on the hole (or pushing space above that hole) will fill the hole, up to 5 squares.

    On the keyboard:

X and C: rotate the piece CCW and CW
Z: Horizontally flip the selected piece
1 - 3: Select the corresponding piece from the toolbox
    Space: Selects/releases piece
    Q, W, A and S: Center the selected piece over the top-left, top-right, bottom-left and bottom-right holes (respectively)
Arrow Keys: Move the selected piece
For the putty bucket, clicking on the hole (or pushing space above that hole) will fill the hole, up to 5 squares.

Basically, bank on the common pieces, and don’t build masterpieces that require less common pieces to fill. Once you have memorized this chart, read these steps to increase your chances of getting a masterpiece (the goal of Carpentry):

    1. When on a masterpiece streak, stall the hole that is least likely to be perfectly filled as long as possible to keep your steak as long as possible.

    2. Use a mouse. Using your keyboard or a trackpad is futile

    3. Always use a mouse. Using your keyboard or a trackpad is much harder and you will waste time with all the keys.

    4. When a hole needs two pieces until a masterpiece, and you have one of them, save it for as long as possible to increase your chances of getting the second piece and get a masterpiece.

    5. Focus on holes on the same side (as in don't finish holes diagonally.) This way, you have a constant flow of new holes, and more available places for pieces that may be hard to use.

    6. Always do smaller holes first, they require the least amount of time and effort, and there is a less chance that you will booch the hole.

    7. Also, when focusing on smaller holes, keep your big holes empty so you have space to put pieces that would otherwise booch your smaller holes.

    8. When working on bigger holes, start from the outside, and work in. This is called the puzzle piece technique, as people generally work on the border first when doing a puzzle.

    9. The puzzle piece technique works because you are essentially building an empty square inside your hole, and squares are easier to fill.

    10. If possible, try to go for a grain bonus. You recieve a grain bonus when all the wood grains are running the same way. If you are going to booch a hole, try to go for the grain bonus to maximize points.

    11. Remember that when pieces spawn in your toolbox, the grain is ALWAYS running from left to right. The I, Y, L, and I grains always run across the longer side of the piece.

    12. Always double check when you place a piece. Everyone makes mistakes, and you wouldn't want to ruin your streak because you accidently moved your mouse at the last second. Taking this extra second is worth taking in case of screw ups.

    13. In the chance you should get a putty bucket, you should save it for as long as you can. This way you will be prepared when you don't have the piece you need for a masterpiece.

    14. Start to memorize the common holes you get when carpenting. This way you will be prepared to use common patterns with pieces you get in your toolbox.

    15. Practice. Then practice some more. Most people practice on the navy, but I find the constant breaking annoying and find it better to practice on pillies.

    16. Have a primary hole to focus on, and a secondary hole adjacent to it. Use common pieces on these two holes, while using harder to use pieces on other holes.

    17. When finishing a hole, try to make it so that the final piece needed is a common piece. For example, if you had to choose between your final piece being an I piece or a P piece, choose P.

Disagree about the grain bonuses. They slow you down and are generally a waste of time. I usually ignore YPPedia when it comes to puzzles.

Also it's best to use a combo of mouse and keyboard. E.g. using 1,2 and 3 and your mouse.

I find ,z,x,c to be the most comfortable. You don't need to overextend your fingers and you can rest your hands for longer puzzle sessions.

Le oops. >> And yes my personal control preference is z,x,c coupled with the mouse. And no I don't think grain bonuses are a waste of time if you know enough about them to be able to get them without sacrificing speed or quality. Even if you can't do that which hardly any normal person can, they're good for when you're going to booch up a hole anyways. Might as well get some extra points for it.

Except good carpenters don't plan on booching holes... I usually only booch if there is only 1 piece left to fill and my other holes are all done.

Great tutorial. Once you are familiar with the puzzle practise is your best friend. Knowing pieces and being able to visualize how they will fit, and of course speed
