To follow this guide successfully you have to be decent at bnav, gunning, SFing and/or rumbling.
I got annoyed with idiot jobbers (my bnav is average at best so i dont get jobbers easily) and getting 300 - 500 PoE per pirate per battle...
So i found an alternative to make PoE from pillaging. With this method you can make a solid 2k - 4k per battle and get TH and foraging spots and BK compasses <- you get a lot of BK compasses..
It's really simple:
-start out on a sloop with your default 3 swabbies.
-best to sail a busy route between 2 large islands.
-load the cannons
-scout for green ringed ships
-engage...
-max them. Solo bnav is quite easy since the other ship runs out of moves really quickly. (if your bnav stat is below master or you dont care about it, it's easiest to wait it out or just bnav defensively)
-grapple.. but before the battle starts fire all the swabbies..you have about 15secs to fire them before it starts.
-the fight is gonna be 4-6 vs 1. It's really pretty easy if the score is max-0 (or max - < 3).
-remember to kill their captain (the one wearing a hat) last (okay so this is just a theory..it's not proven that killing the captain last delivers more booty)
NB: you have to fire ALL the swabbies before the battle starts, otherwise it won't work.
The secret behind this method is that the amount of booty you receive greatly depends on how close the fight was won. Winning a 1vs4 fight and killing the captain last looks pretty close. So with this method you are actively creating the perfect circumstances to get the maximum amount of booty. I mean after you have won 1-2 battles you get 4k booty; that means you immediately receive 2k and the other 2k goes to the hold and booty. Excluding TH and foraging scores..
This method works even better with 2 people..Doing it with 2 you don't even have to max them if you are fighting a green ship. And you get KB more often. If you are doing it with people, one has to suicide before you win.
This method has some disadvantages though...Unless you are an amazing multi-tasker your gunning stat is gonna suffer and if you get shot more than 3 times you are probly gonna lose. Also if you suck at SFing and rumble you are probly gonna lose (unless you do it with 2 people).
Some extra tips:
-don't attack harder ships than yellow, its not worth it, you don't get better booty. Green delivers the best booty in my experience.
-don't move around a lot the first few turns while bnavving, build up your moves and let them run out of moves.
-rig while you don't gun for extra moves.
-do it with 2 people if you struggle with bnav,SFing or rumble.
Anyway, let me know how this worked for you and if you can find a way to improve it or get KB more often..

Lmfao, I know right. What is fun is, (under the assumption that you're good at sf/rumble) killing the captain asap as the game starts XD. I usually do that in sfing when I come across a navver that says that (*)(*)-line in chat.

On the other hand, the swabbie idea seems interesting enough to try out.
I believe half of this is off pure myths, but it might be true. According to the YPPedia. Swabbies cost nothing apart from the rum that they drink and the 'captain' is aesthetic. On the other hand, your theory about the swabbies may be right (seeing as YPPedia isn't 1/2 the time)

I tried it, I got abnormally high loot. Though.. I will note that you lose about 1/2 of the battles unless you're gm+ sf/rumble, and that it's near impossible to win if you get hit more than once.
you should really try it for yourself before speculating about its validity.
yeah, like i said, decent...otherwise you need to do it with 2 people with one of you suiciding before you win.
