If you are an eager gamer, you’ve definitely seen our world destroyed in several ways, but never as you’ll get to experience in Rage. The game is going to give you a beautiful world, which speaks to your inner explorer, so go check what’s around the corner on the road!
The game takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where an asteroid has demolished earth and all the governments figure out a way to prevent extinction of mankind by putting the most important people in cryo-pods under the ground..
As the game starts you’ll see the asteroid hitting the earth, while the VIPs are all crawling sacredly inside their cryo-pods with hope of survival, planning to rebuild earth after the impact. Then you wake up, 106 years after being put into stasis inside the ark, quickly noticing that all of the other VIPs that were buried with you have suffered a horrific death. You get out of the Ark and you can just feel how smitten your character is by what has happened to his planet. Shortly afterwards you’re attacked by the so called “Bandits” but a handsome lad by the name Dan comes to your rescue and brings you to the other human survivors of the impact. Dan has a few jobs for you and you better be ready to pay him back for his help.
Overall I think the beginning of the game was good, start missions are very catchy, and it’s really getting you in the mood for smashing heads. When I noticed I was put into stasis for 106 years I could not wait to come out into the open and see what earth had become.
Throughout the different missions in the game, which are going to get longer and harder, you constantly meet new personas. These meetings will become a pleasure, because of the beautiful graphics, the realistic animations and the perfect voice acting that the game has. It has to be said though, that if you chose to play the game with subtitles, it can sometimes be frustrating that there is a speaker in the background that is subtitled while your mission is getting read out loud.
When playing throughout RAGE, you kind of notice a few things that the game has got in common with some other titles. The world you play in can be compared to how the world is in Fallout and Borderlands. Furthermore there is driving, which plays just a minor role if you ask me. After you complete some of the races and you’re done with the game you could go back and finish them all. These races can be compared to games such as Burnout and MotorStorm, in which you can upgrade your car with racing certificates from won races. The whole game can be compared to Half-Life, since the society in RAGE seems a lot like the one over there, where world is controlled by some kind of a “Super-power” that you have to bring down.

It might sound like RAGE is the game of the year, and that there are no problems. This is, however, not true. When I played it on X-box and PS3 there were some EXTREMELY long loading scenes (like a whole minute), which occurred way too often in the game. This didn’t really happen when I played the game on PC, the loading screens seemed way faster (10 seconds woop woop) and didn’t really bother me that much. There are some annoying “pop-ins” in the textures, but I think that this really shouldn’t be happening with a game released at the end of 2011.
A video on how the pop-ins affects the game (didn’t do it this much on my PS):
All enemies you fight in RAGE, whether or not they are mutants who jump around like lunatics to avoid your bullets, will be shot through and die a crucial dead. RAGE is a pretty violent game, and it got an age-limit for 18 year-olds, which is well deserved. This game is NOT for kids.
Id Software made a colossal mistake in not making an auto-save feature. Technically speaking, they actually did implement an auto-save feature, but it only saves BEFORE and AFTER a mission begins. This means when you enter a long mission area with tons of killing and you end up dead, back to square one. You can save automatically, but while playing the game I’m the kind who forgets everything when the bullets start to fly, which is in my opinion, a huge minus for the game.
The story in RAGE is absolutely amazing. I love the way that Id Software chose how to take point in something that theoretically could happen. Through the game you’ll see how this new world have been designed, what has been evolved and what “Sports” are in the future. It also shows how simple puzzle games have changed!
A BIG minus to the story however, is how they chose to end it. For the story-loving people the ending is really annoying, I won’t really say more since I don’t want to ruin it for players that haven’t played it.
The game uses Id Softwares’ new OpenGL based on the id Tech 5 engine.
Id Software isn’t just any company, Id Software was the company behind world first person shooter game DOOM, and furthermore Quake.
