You can colonize blank spaces in the universe, and create another planet for yourself, but you can not take other peoples planets.
So, if I am understanding this correctly, you can grab other planets that isn't your home one? And can you build buildings and research ect on them to get you pumping out fleets twice as fast?
If so, how do you do this?
Thanks, Im still figuring things out

Well you better start building the fleet to back it up.
By the way, you should use your dynamic signature
So, is it advantageous to colonize as many planets as possible in the beginning?
What are the benefits of having new planets?
Yes, it is very advantageous. Lets say you build 5 more colonies, now you get 5x the amount of resources. The more colonies you have, the faster you can become stronger.
Although it is advised that when you make colonies, you spread them out across the universe so no one can find them.
Can you run us through game mechanics for taking colonies/attacking? From what I can see, it is pretty limited in what you can tell how to do. For instance, After I get my colony ship, how do I send it out to take a new planet? Also, how do i attack other people? If these are real n00b questions, feel free to pm me and we can arrange a time to chat or take it to pms.
